Another Successful GSU Gerontology Alumni Event!
On Tuesday December 5, Gerontology Alumni were joined by faculty, students, and friends of Gerontology for an evening celebrating alumni success – featuring Ginny Helms and Walter Coffey. Congratulations again to Ginny Helms on her new position as LeadingAge Georgia’s President and CEO! Ginny, who received a Gerontology Certificate in 1995, is a respected advocate for older adults with over 20 years’ experience in public policy in Georgia. Congratulations to Walter Coffey, who received his graduate certificate in Gerontology in 1990, on his retirement. After 18 years as President and CEO at LeadingAge Georgia, he will be starting new adventures in consulting and continuing to teach the Aging Policy and Programs class at GSU. Not only are Ginny and Walter recognized nationally and regionally as advocates for older adults, but they have also been active alumni giving their time and resources to the Institute through mentoring students, teaching classes, making monetary donations to the Institute, and promoting GSU Gerontology to the community.
It was a pleasure to see our students, both past and present come together with faculty and friends to support such a wonderful occasion. Despite the rain and chilly weather, approximately 40 people joined us for the evening’s festivities. After toasts to our guest of honor, Dr. Burgess gave an update about the latest news from the Gerontology Institute. If you are an alumni of the Gerontology Institute and would like to get more involved contact us at gerontology@gsu.edu with your updated contact information and “like” us on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/GSUGerontology/. For information about giving to Gerontology please contact Dr. Burgess at eburgess@gsu.edu or 404-413-5210.
The Gerontology Institute would like to thank everyone for attending the Gerontology Alumni Celebration 2017. Please join us in thanking, Carol Rowe Jones (’99) for providing us with such a beautifully decorated venue in the atrium of 1280 W. Peachtree Condominiums. All in all, we hope everyone enjoyed their evening as much as we did. Have a safe and restful holiday season, and we will see you in 2018!
