Why Study Gerontology?
The population around the globe is aging and this demographic shift influences every aspect of society. One in eight Americans is over the age of 65 and this number will continue to grow. We need experts who are trained in gerontology to address the policy and service needs of this new population of elders. We need scholars to research issues of aging from a variety of fields of study, such as psychology, sociology, physical therapy, nursing, education, exercise science, social work, real estate, economics, public health, criminal justice and many others.
What can I do with a Gerontology degree or certificate?
The graduates from our program work for local and state agencies, non-profit organizations, health and long-term-care institutions, financial and legal firms, as well as private companies that develop products and services for older adults. Some students establish their own aging-related businesses.
